Innovation Success: from concept to a cholesterol-lowering brew

A collaboration project between Welsh business Tetrim Teas, BIC Innovation and Aberystwyth University has seen a concept for a healthy tea grow into a new product now available to buy.

Mari, who founded Tetrim Teas in 2021 as a not-for-profit business, started her innovation journey with the idea for a Welsh, natural, health boosting version of Chinese tea. Through the Future Foods Programme, BIC Innovation were able to help Mari research and source suitable, gut health improving ingredients such as rhubarb root, yellow dock, barberry fruit and figs, and went on to coordinate focus groups in order to capture consumer perceptions of these ingredients.

BIC provided Mari with research into tea trends which included formats, sales impact and consumer demographics. Through funding from Novel Foods, advice was also offered on the information that should be included on the packaging and labelling to support health claims and advice.

“As a start-up in the food sector, BIC Innovation supported early product development, helping to identify local plants with health benefits for my health tea blend. They then supported me with packaging and labelling, an area that I was really struggling with.”

In order to assess the impact the tea has on health and wellbeing, in 2022 Aberystwyth University conducted clinical trials on 52 participants. The results showed positive changes in participant health markers, including a significant reduction in LDL, ‘bad cholesterol’.

Mari has now launched the Rhubarb Root Tea Blend, which is available to buy through her website, but doesn’t plan on stopping there and is already looking into the development of new teas with Welsh ingredients, including Welsh-grown lavender, Welsh algae or Lions Mane mushroom.

The funded projects who supported this development includes Future Foods (Welsh Government & WEFO), Sustainable Future Foods, Smart Recovery (Decarbonisation & Covid Recovery, Welsh Government) and most recently, a project focused on developing Novel Foods (BBSRC).
