BIC Innovation Career Stories: Growing Through Training and Development

At BIC, we know that training and development are essential to building a motivated and engaged workforce. That’s why we strive to maintain a culture of learning. We often say that every day at BIC is a school day, whether that’s learning through team collaboration, hands-on projects, or formal training programmes. When our team succeeds, we all succeed.

Mel Flanagan is a perfect example of this in action. Starting her journey with us as a part-time Finance Assistant on the Sustainable Scale Up Programme, Mel now plays a crucial role as BIC’s Finance Officer, managing internal finances and providing essential support for various projects and clients. Her career development not only reflects her personal drive and ambitions but also the opportunities for professional development we strive to offer.

From budget management to financial reporting, she ensures everything runs smoothly and meets legal and ethical standards.

As part of our BIC Innovation Career Stories Mel shares her career journey and the impact of development initiatives.

How has training and development shaped your journey at BIC?

“BIC has offered both tailored training and support for external opportunities, through our annual STEP Talks with my line manager, I’ve been able to pinpoint new areas of interests and take a proactive approach to my learning. Alongside this has been the scope to develop professionally and take on increased responsibility.”

In what ways has BIC supported your professional growth?

“Before joining BIC, I was already on my way to achieving my CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) qualification, BIC provided a training agreement that covered study materials, exam fees, and offered a yearly study leave allowance. This support has been crucial for my development and efficiency in my role.”

What training opportunities have you explored, and how have they impacted your role?

“I’ve had access to a range of training opportunities, from in-house software training to role-specific financial and payroll training like financial budgeting & forecasting, and other valuable training such as Mental Health Awareness. All have played a part in helping me to develop professionally and to enable me to perform my role efficiently.”

What are your future goals within the company?

“My aim is to qualify within the next 12 months—I’ve got one exam left! I plan to fully step into the role of Internal Accountant and support BIC’s Finance Director.”

What are you most proud of?

“My determination to succeed in achieving CIMA status. Juggling studies with full time work and a busy family life definitely has its challenges!”

Mel’s resilience, dedication, and ability to balance challenging responsibilities while pursuing her goals are just a few reasons we couldn’t be prouder to have her as a key part of our team. We’re cheering her on as she nears qualification and continues to make impact at BIC.
