Anna, Angharad and Anja tackle the beacons in aid of Newlife charity

Our team love a challenge and this summer, our Marketing Executive Anna, Project Co-ordinator Angharad and Project Assistant Anja laced up their walking shoes and took to the hills to raise money for disabled children and their needs.

Who are Newlife?

Newlife is a charity supporting nurses, volunteers and families to improve the lives of disabled children up and down the UK. All of the money raised for Newlife goes towards equipment to better the lives of children in need.

From birth defects to childhood cancer and diseases, Newlife are on hand to help wherever they can. There are over a million disabled and terminally ill children here in the UK and Newlife are able to provide equipment for those who would otherwise have to go without and suffer as a consequence.

Newlife also support medical research, identifying disease causing genes and funding projects for new treatments. Furthermore, in 2012 The Newlife Birth Defects Research centre was opened at the Institute of Child Health in London. It is the biggest centre in Europe researching into birth defects, the biggest health threat to child health worldwide.

The challenge

Trekking 50km through the training areas of the SAS, Anna, Angharad and Anja beat the blisters for the wonderful scenery of the South Wales hills and a good cause. Angharad explains how her idea led to many blisters, lost toenails and a huge amount of money for charity;

“I’d heard of this challenge a few years ago through an old colleague, but I’d never been able to get a team together to do it with me, until now.  The key word for me in this was ‘challenge’. It wasn’t worth doing if it wasn’t going to challenge us, especially if we were going to be hounding colleagues, family and friends for money. Anna ‘happily’ agreed, so we signed up for the Trekfest 50Km walk through the Brecon Beacons with Global Adventures. To be fair, most people thought we were mad taking on the 50K rather than the 25k (demonstrated by the fact that only Anna and I signed up).  “How hard can it be?” I remember saying, “it’s just putting one foot in front of the other…” Oh how those words came back to haunt me!”

“Fast forward seven months to July 2019, we’re 12 hours into the 50Km walk, approximately 38Km done and shuffling through Cwm Llwch having just come down off Pen Y Fan, and I can honestly say it was at that point I regretted ever muttering those words. However, blisters, bruises and missing toenails aside (oh yes, it wasn’t pleasant!) it was an amazing and unforgettable experience, and to top it all we raised £1700 for the brilliant charity, Newlife. It was this that actually kept me going when I hit rock bottom, my sore feet and aching hips were nothing compared to how some disabled children in Wales were suffering unnecessarily on a daily basis because they don’t have access to the specialist equipment that they need. The money we were raising would enable Newlife to buy the specialist equipment and improve a child’s quality of life.  We could actually make a difference to a child’s life.  Now if that wasn’t a reason to keep putting one foot in front of the other I don’t know what is!”

Anna added, “We would like to say a big thank you to all our colleagues, friends and family who donated to such a good cause and helped us reach our target. It was a huge source of encouragement to keep going on the day, even through the moaning, crying and intense blisters! We are especially grateful to BICs board of directors for their generous sponsorship, and helping to make a difference to the lives of disabled children in Wales”.

What challenges lie ahead for BIC?

Angharad is currently in the process of organising a team challenge for 2020, which entails canoeing 100 miles down the River Wye! Although Anna’s key advice for all who are tempted to take part in Angharad’s challenges is “don’t listen to Angharad’s wonderful ideas!”, but we are pretty sure she’ll be a canoeing expert in no time!

BIC Innovation are delighted to be able to give back to the community and are very proud of their employees giving their time, money and toenails to such good causes!
