Success in the real world of highly competitive manufacturing often depends upon selecting and designing in the right materials.  The design, specification and selection of new materials for cost and performance characteristics, for aesthetics, ethnographics, added value, sustainability and, overall, harnessing new materials as key drivers for innovation.

The Materials Opportunities workshops are your opportunity to explore how you can exploit materials innovation to improve the design and competitiveness of your products, and to explore future developments.

  • Briefings on all the latest materials developments from advanced composites to recycled materials to speciality steels and plastics
  • Embedding materials into your design, innovation and development thinking
  • Accessing design and technology expertise in advanced materials
  • Assistance and funding through Business Innovation

The workshop is led by Dafydd Davies, Chief Executive of BIC Innovation, and is presented by Business Innovation – Design.  Chris Lefteri is a leading international design specialist at the RCA working with TSB, and global manufacturers such as LG, Nike, Dow Corning and DuPont (www.chrislefteri.com). Nigel Keen is Composites Sector Leader at the Materials KTN (https://ktn.innovateuk.org/web/materialsktn), is a Materials Engineer and focused on identifying opportunities in emerging materials technologies.  Jakki Dehn of Kingston University developed Creative Resource for the Design Council and AHRC into an extensive recycled and sustainable materials resource for designers and manufacturers. Paul Jones of Tata Steel is the Industrial Lead at the new £20m SPECIFIC Innovation & Knowledge Centre in Swansea and also R&D Manager at SBEC (www.sbec.eu.com).
